“You poor thing!” she cried. “This looks like an arrow wound.” She examined the cut. “Someone has been hunting you, I’d guess.” She searched the shelf and took down a container labeled SALVE OF PALM STALK. “Now hold still,” she said, thinking to herself that she must be quite mad, attending to a sea serpent that could swallow her in one bite. She emptied the canister, slathering the gooey paste gently over the wound. Several damaged silver scales fell into her paw. “How beautiful you are,” she whispered. “I didn’t know serpents still existed. How could anyone hurt you?” She smoothed the creature’s neck with salve and began to softly hum the Romany lullaby.
